Genuflection (or genuflexion) is the act of bending a knee to the ground. It’s also known as “bowing the knee” which is a gesture of deep respect and reverence to someone (or idol) more superior than you.
It is said that the genuflection must be neither hurried nor careless in order for the heart to bow. Genuflection, or bowing the knee, is an act of worship since it involves the engagement of the heart.
In the book of Daniel, his 3 friends Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego, refused to bow down and worship the golden image of Babylonian idol, King Nebuchadnezzar. They are then sentenced to death by burning in the fiery furnace but the God that they bowed down to protected them and preserved their lives (Daniel 3).
This world today has many newly created gods & idols. They come in different forms, statues and even movements. Who or what you bow your knee to and worship, is the one you serve and it becomes your master. Who you submit your heart to in reverence, has tremendous power over you and it owns you. You are enslaved to it.
WHAT IS AN IDOL?
It is an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship. Whatever we treasure more than God, drives our thoughts and actions, and becomes the most important focus and priority in our lives, is an idol.
Money and expensive things such as cars or designer goods, people such as a political leader, a celebrity, a religious leader or your own “self” can become idols. Movements, politics and religions produce some of the most common idols in modern times.
Idols dull our spiritual hearing and harden our hearts to the things of God.
In Matthew 6:24, speaking about the god of money (mammon), Jesus said “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money”.
Many people are handing control of their lives over to other ‘gods’, knowingly or unknowingly. We have an enemy that has been trying to steal worship from God since the beginning. He’ll inhabit an idol and disguise himself that way in order to get the worship that he craves for. As a result, people are getting bound.
There is ONLY one TRUE God and King. He came into this world to set us free from bondage. He’s name is Yeshua, King of all kings and Lord of all lords. If you’ve ever bowed the knee to anyone, or anything else besides Him (even a statue or anything made of wood or stone), you need to bow down before HIM now in repentance and He will lift you up.
Today is a good day to be set free.
